The International Childrens Digital Library (ICDL) brings a worldwide collection of childrens books to the iPhone. The largest collection of its kind, the ICDL spans the globe with thousands of childrens books from 60 countries, in a wide assortment of beautiful languages with captivating illustrations. Meet the six Mongolian brothers in search of knowledge, the gray peacemaker cat that does something most unusual to the other cats ears, or a version of the Three Little Pigs that you surely have never heard before.

The ICDL is brought to you on the iPhone with the kind support of the Zumobi Widget Network and the University of Marylands Human-Computer Interaction Lab. It presents 4 beautiful books drawn from the permanent collection, two from the US, one from Palestine, and one from Mongolia – each available in English and their native language, and each using ICDLs innovative "ClearText" technology which makes each word sharper than ever before on so small a screen.

These initial 4 books will be updated over time as we offer more books from our much larger collection available at www.childrenslibrary.org. We encourage you to come back often to enjoy the fruits of this wonderful collection. The full ICDL at www.childrenslibrary.org offers readers around the world free access to thousands of exemplary childrens books in almost 50 languages. Its mission is to excite and inspire young readers to become better world citizens by leveraging technology to reach underserved children who have little access to libraries. The ICDL is offered free of charge to everyone, everywhere with no advertising.

If you value the ICDL or feel some resonance with our mission, please visit us at www.childrenslibrary.org and consider supporting our work at ICDL Foundation by clicking on the red "Make a Donation" button. Your contribution of $25 will help insure that the Library keeps its doors wide open to all.

Pros and cons of ICDL Books for Children - International Children's Digital Library app for iPhone and iPad

ICDL Books for Children - International Children's Digital Library app good for

Ive been a fan of ICDL for years. So many quality books for children from all over the world. Hope more books are added soon. As well ICDL needs to seek author permission to create an audio track for each line of text in each story. After all, it will be children, parents and teachers who download the books to ipods and iphones. And I believe this audience would want to hear the book as well as read it. Thank you
The books need to be age specific or something. I like all the books, but children includes my 2 & 4 year old, who get antsy with too many words, and they turn the page too soon on the books other than Waldo.
Would love to see more books available. Pictures and text show up just fine.
If you need a half hour quiet time with a 3-6 yr old, download this with the 4 stories. Its good old fashion fun and the one book that bounces from English to Aramaic is great!
My two year old wont go to sleep without reading "Waldo at the Zoo," one of the four books in this app. I love that it is a simple book, simply done, without adds. Thank you. I wish there were more books available for the app.

Some bad moments

i think the web site is great but the iPhone app still demands a lot of upgrade. just 4 books is practically useless, text (expecially arabic) needs more enlarge options. you should let people bookmark pages of books they read and more integration with registered users options needed.
Of the four stories included in this app, only waldo at the zoo works. The images and text are bold enough to read at a glance. On the remaining three storiez, The "tap to enlarge text" box is ridiculous and the images are of such poor resolution that they are basically useless.
I was excited for this app and really wanted it to work. My 2 year old loves to read, and I thought this would be great. Not so. The ease of use is not there. My suggestion, go buy a book. For you and your childs sake.
I really got excited about the app and about having children stories on the go, but in practice, the app is not as good as it has the potential to become. Mere (poor) scans of the originals are too analog for the iPhone . Here are a few suggestions, for which Id even be willing to have the app not be free anymore, that apply to all books except "Waldo at the Zoo", which I think works well: - more books - better image resolution - more intuitive text. (The pop up text, though not necessarily a bad idea in itself, is quite a turn off in children books.) - more language choices, manageable in the app settings, and/or through a language menu accessible from the books themselves, maybe through a small flag icon or something similar - possibility to zoom in on picture details and text - possibilty to bookmark favorite books - narration in multiple languages
